Sports Day is a true reflection of St Mary’s spirit

16 June 2022

Thursday 16 June 2022 saw the return of St Mary’s Sports Day after a two-year absence. Girls from Year 5 through to Year 10 took part in track and field events at Colchester Garrison. Beautiful sunny and warm weather helped the positive and supportive atmosphere throughout the day, with a great balance of competitiveness and sportsmanship.

A number of records were broken, including Annika in Year 5 who broke the 75m record, Jodie in Year 6 broke the long jump and 600m records and Ebun, also in Year 6 broke the 75m record. Three students in Year 7 had record breaking results with Sophia triumphing in the 200m and 800m races, Lottie in javelin and Lauren in the long jump. Ella broke her PB in the 800m and Lizzie increased her distance in the long jump.

All the girls were outstanding in terms of effort, attitude and performance, with lots of personal bests. It was a very positive day and the students were extremely proud of themselves, whether it was at the excitement of winning a medal or by offering to step into events where their peers were absent, the whole experience was a true reflection of the St Marys spirit. The Year 10s rounded off the event with a lap of honour with much applause from the spectators.

There was a great deal of laughter, brilliant team spirit with a large number of supportive parents in attendance, cheering on the girls. The overall house winner was Balkernegate with an impressive 360 points.
