St Mary’s fundraising efforts supply school uniform to pupils in Africa

10 November 2021

Following the fantastic fundraising efforts from St Mary’s Senior School, the Catherine Bullen Foundation were able to purchase much needed new school uniform for pupils in Namibia.

Funded by the generous donations of over £3,500 from the St Mary’s Senior School students, parents and staff, the pupils age four to 11 at the Good Hope Primary School in Namibia gratefully received the 500 new uniforms, which they proudly wear during the school day.

“Students at St Mary’s are keen to be involved in their communities and to give their support to charities.” Said Miss Anwen Jones, Head of St Mary’s Senior School. “Several thousand pounds in donations are raised every year by St Mary’s families with fundraising activities for the Catherine Bullen Foundation spearheaded by the school’s Round Square Committee. We are delighted to support the Catherine Bullen Foundation and the amazing humanitarian projects they co-ordinate to help the relief of poverty, sickness and distress and to preserve health and education in rural Namibia.”

St Mary’s Senior School has supported the work of the Mersea based charity for several years, with £8,900 being raised at the Senior School through a variety of student-led initiatives including cake sales, non-uniform days, car washes and charity cinema evenings, which have all been keenly supported by students, parents and staff knowing they can make a difference for this very worthy cause.

The Catherine Bullen Foundation was set up in memory of Roger and Linda Bullen’s daughter Catherine, a fifth-year medical student who tragically died at the age of 22 from gastro enteritis whilst on a safari in Namibia.
