St Mary’s students celebrate GCSE results day despite challenging times

12 August 2021

Another year of successful GCSE results was celebrated at St Mary’s Senior School on Thursday 12 August, with students being welcomed back to school to collect their results.

Despite the cancellation of exams and closure of schools, the results for St Mary’s are outstanding and truly reflect the hard work and commitment of both students and their teaching staff. 99% of all GCSEs were at Grade 4 and above with 98% of all candidates achieving five or more GCSEs at Grade 4 and above, including Maths and English. An impressive 57% of St Mary’s students achieved A*-A/Grade 9-7, compared to 28.9% of UK GCSE entries. There was 100% pass rate in 22 subjects: English Language, English Literature, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, German, Fine Art, Photography, Classics, Drama, Fashion and Textiles, Geography, History, Hospitality and Catering, ICT, Latin, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Statistics and Russian.

“I am incredibly proud of our girls’ achievement at GCSE, especially as St Mary’s is a non-selective school” said St Mary’s Principal, Mrs Hilary Vipond. “In these difficult times it is only right and proper that the staff who know the girls so well are the ones providing the Teacher Assessed Grades, and with a low staff turnover very many of the girls have been taught by a member of staff for five years. These super results are a reflection of all their hard work at school and at home – online learning has been a real triumph! Seeing the positive outcomes of the high quality, tailored education, support and encouragement we provide to the girls has made for a wonderful final GCSE results day for me. The students have aimed high and have subsequently achieved outstanding academic results. St Mary’s will continue to offer a brilliantly balanced education in a happy and enriching environment when Mrs Nicola Griffiths takes over as Principal in September.”
