Incredible creations on the catwalk at St Mary’s Fashion Show

2 July 2021

Textiles students at St Mary’s amazed audiences with their spectacular creations at their Senior School Fashion Show at the end of the summer term.

Girls in Years 8 to 11 showed poise and confidence as they modelled garments they had made themselves, in response to a variety of design briefs.

Everyone was enormously impressed as Year 8 girls modelled pyjamas bottoms they had made, Year 9 students showed off their upcycled, tie-dyed kimonos, t-shirts, summer dresses and trainers and O Level Fashion and Textiles students modelled a special occasion garment inspired by a charity, a fashion era or planet earth for the audience to see on the catwalk.

Of particular note was Year 11 student Pippa’s stunning Help for Heroes inspired dress which has gone viral thanks to a tweet from her proud father. As well as catching the attention of the Help for Heroes charity itself, the post has also been retweeted by Strictly star, JJ Chalmers, who describes the dress as ‘amazing’. Pippa drew inspiration for her dress from the 51 soldier sculptures created and installed by steel fabricator, Duncan Pittock, in Mersea and Peldon. They represent the men from the area who lost their lives in the First World War and were created to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Great War.

Mrs Vipond, Principal said “The Fashion Show was a real showcase of technical skills and design flair and demonstrated the girls’ ability to rise to the challenges of researching garments for inspiration, interpreting their ideas and developing their own creations using a choice of fabrics, techniques and details. We are extremely proud of everyone’s hard work!”
