Tuesday 28 January

Year 7 Basketball 3v3 Tournament

The Year 7 Basketball team faced their first competitive fixture this season and were one of 11 other schools at Thomas Lord Audley School taking part in a 3v3 tournament on Tuesday this week.

Beating St Helena School 2-0, Colchester High School 7-0, St Benedict’s College 6-0 and drawing with Thomas Lord Audley School 1-1, the girls progressed to the top of their pool to the semi-finals.

They met Stanway School in the semis and drew 3-3, which then went to a tie break situation as there had to be a winner- the first team to score progressed to the finals.  A frantic few minutes followed, and although we had more shots on the basket, Stanway were first to score.  The team then played Paxman Academy in the play offs and were defeated 7-3. We came 4th overall, but the winning team were St Benedict’s College who we had beaten 6-0!

Needless to say, I was immensely proud of the team, who fought hard at every stage of the evening.  Incredibly supportive of each other and demonstrated true St Mary’s team spirit.  A good little team in the making!  Players were Imogen, Evie, Isobelle, Ella and Alice.

Wednesday 29 January

Year 8 Basketball v St Helena School

Wednesday night’s team was a very good one and hard to beat. Although our team played very well considering, we were very good at defending and all we need to remember is to stand still and not move when the player moves. Our shooting was very good, and we didn’t forget to pass in and out of the D. I think we have improved a lot since the last game, and we have learnt a lot from this game and the last one. The only thing that I think could help us is if we are always making sure that we are marking our player, especially when shooting!

The score line of 52-10 to St Helena, was not a true reflection on the game and how well the students played, indeed I am pleased to see how well they are progressing in their play and taking on board advice given – unfortunately for us, St Helena have a couple of exceptional players who when they had the ball scored every time.
