20 March 2019
A team of six Year 4 girls represented St Mary’s at a Public Speaking Competition led by the English Speaking Union at Anglia Ruskin University on Wednesday 20 March. Our chosen topic was why ‘Good Manners are Important’.
The girls were judged on voice, gestures, eye contact, personality and how they were able to gain and hold the audience’s interest. Martha gave a very strong introduction, Alice read a poetry line with clarity and confidence, and Olivia was crucial in carrying out the management role to welcome the judges back. Tiasha, who was our speaker, gave an excellent speech after being introduced brilliantly by Elsa. Questions were then asked from the opposing team and audience relating to our topic. Our Team Questioner, Imogen then had to listen carefully to the opposing team’s speech and pose thoughtful questions.
The judges found it very hard to decide on the overall winner and they praised the quality of the contributions, and the standard of all participants. We were thrilled to gain 2nd place. Elsa was also congratulated, and won a medal for the best Chairperson. All girls were an absolute credit to the school. We are very proud of them and received many comments prior to the competition of how well-behaved and presented they were.
Representing St Mary’s: Martha-Louise (Captain), Elsa (Chairperson), Tiasha (Speaker), Imogen (Questioner), Olivia (Management),
Alice (Poetry Reader).
Thank you to Mrs Kurzynski for preparing the girls for this challenging and rewarding event.
