Following exciting and intense voting in School, a small group of Year 7 and Year 8 Senior School students were selected to represent St Mary’s at the 2018 Children’s Book Award ceremony on Saturday 9 June. Accompanied by Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Cassell, the four lucky students, Hannah, Mia H, Adrienne and Mia S set off bright and early to make their way to London for the celebrations. It was a very exciting day as the girls had all voted for their favourite books and couldn’t wait to hear the verdict! The students were invited to announce the winner of the ‘Books for Older Readers’ category who was named as Penny Joelson, author of the thriller ‘I Have No Secrets’. All were in agreement that she was a very worthy winner, the English department are hoping to persuade her to come in to school to share her novel writing secrets!
Although some of the girls who voted were not able to attend in person, they were still rewarded with the knowledge that their personal messages they had written to their favourite authors were collated and presented to them in a special portfolio at the ceremony.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day, it was amazing to talk over lunch with so many current children’s authors!
