Basketball success!

12 January 2018

This week saw a number of action-packed basketball games from students in various year groups within St Mary’s Senior School. Some significant successes were gained, a great start to the season!

Year 7 Basketball v The Gilberd School

The Year 7s played their first basketball game of the year on Tuesday 9 January – a friendly 3v3 against The Gilberd School. Nine girls took part and they all thoroughly enjoyed their first competitive basketball experience. The teams applied the skills they had learnt in basketball club brilliantly as well as developing their game sense throughout. Final scores saw Team One draw 6-6 and Team Two draw 10-10.

Year 10 Basketball v Stanway

On Wednesday 10 January the Year 10s played Stanway School in their final pool game of the basketball league. The team started very confidently and were soon scoring baskets. Some very controlled play and good defence saw St Mary’s take a strong lead early on. With the team focusing on moving the ball around the key and tactical play, they continued to increase their lead on the scoreboard. Another great performance ended in a 48-8 win. The girls have now won all their games in their pool – great work!

Year 8 Basketball v St Helena

On Thursday 11 January, Year 8 played St Helena School. Despite some of the team making their debuts for the basketball season, they soon settled into their play. A close first quarter saw the St Mary’s team focus on their defending play, which enabled some fast breaks and soon more points were being added to the scoreboard. The team improved throughout the game and there was some very good linking play. Final score 30 – 10, well done everyone!
