Today is National Poetry Day so in recognition of that, the Head of English, Mrs Mitchell and I have just had our weekly enrichment meeting with the ‘Books and Beyond’ group.
We’d asked the girls to find a favourite poem and after a brief discussion about the power of poetry and the many ways we come across it on a daily basis, there was no shortage of hands when we asked if anyone wanted to read a poem aloud. The theme of this year was ‘Truth’ and it is definitely true that I really enjoyed hearing the girls choices – not all to theme but we didn’t stress that point – which ranged from classics such as ‘Mcavity: The Mystery Cat’ (by T S Eliot) to poems about feelings, doing your best, being special and even llamas. There was also a joint reading of a poem by Maya Angelou. Very diverse but truthfully inspiring.
