My other unexpected summer book hit was written by Danny Weston. I’ve read (and loved) other books by Danny but I was apprehensive about ‘Mr Sparks’ which has an historical setting and tells the tale of Owen who is drawn into an adventure with a sinister ventriloquist’s dummy that has a dark past. It proved to be a chilling, creepy and (surprisingly) moving story that raced along, laced with subtle humour (that younger readers might not get). Good writing, highly recommended for age 12 upwards. It shouldn’t provoke nightmares, as it’s not really scary but possibly not one for those easily spooked who have reservations just looking at the cover.
