I shall be heading off tomorrow with a huge bag of books that I want to approve and rate before term resumes in September. Most of them will be new to the school library but there are a few old books that I simply want to read (again) for pleasure. The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fall into the latter category but I am not optimistic that time will be on my side – I think that the summer may be too short!
One of my most recent reads is now going to enjoy summer with one of our current year 10 readers. It is “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Septys. At first I wasn’t sure that I wanted to read this story at all – it sounded so harrowing and parts of it certainly were. It moved me to tears but at the same time but it proved so unforgettable and inspirational that I have no hesitation in recommending it to older readers. Especially those with an interest in World War II history. You can find more details in my latest upper KS3/KS4 recommended reading list.
