Year 4
A wide variety of subjects are studied throughout the year and this helps to enrich the pupil's knowledge and understanding of many new and exciting topics. All lessons take place in a bright and interesting classroom. The pupils work independently, but there are times when partner and group work is encouraged. Practical work is of great benefit to each child and this takes place as often as it is possible.
As a year group, the new topic 'Fly The Flag' has given the pupils a deep insight into many aspects of the British Isles. Many practical sessions have taken place and some sessions have also helped to enhance their maths understanding through the weighing of ingredients during cookery lessons. Welsh Cakes were made to celebrate St. David's Day. on March 1st. The 'Fly The Flag' topic is cross curricular and covers many key Geography and History Skills, including the Anglo Saxons.
Six studies are studied in Science throughout the year and as much practical work as possible, takes place, which helps to reinforce the pupil's understanding of the learning objectives for the various lessons.
A variety of genres are studied in literacy on a weekly basis. The texts range between play scripts, historical, fantasy and imaginary. Poems from other cultures and in different forms (Haiku) are studied with enthusiasm. Non-fiction is addressed through recounts and information texts.
Mathematics play an important part in every child's learning and this area of the curriculum is studied daily. The pupils cover an enormous range of topics during the year and are expected to learn their multiplucations off by heart. A mental arithmetic exercise is completed daily either in a written format or as an oral lesson.
Verbal Reasoning is intensified as the year progresses, helping to prepare the pupils for Year 5.
Music, Art, Design and Technology, ICT, French, Games, P.E., PSCHE and Religous Education are also included in the Year 4 curriculum.
