Year 1
INTRODUCTION
In Year 1 at St. Mary's our aim is to make the transition from Prep to Year 1 as smooth as possible. We will continue to develop every girl's independence and self confidence whilst encouraging a love of learning. Our stimulating and challenging curriculum will ensure every girl reaches their full potential.
CURRICULUM
Literacy - Our literacy is divided into three areas, Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. These areas are covered weekly through a variety of related activities.
Numeracy - Our numeracy covers Number, Shape and Measure, Data-Handling and Money. These areas are taught on a regular basis throughout the year.
Science - Weekly Science lessons aim to encourage observational and investigative skills. We will cover Ourselves, Sound and Hearing, Plants, Light and Dark and Materials.
Geography/History - Over the year we cover topics such as: Our School/Local Environment, People Who Help Us, Homes, Toys, Famous People and Barnaby Bear's Travels. This ensure that there is a weekly History/Geography focus throughout the year.

P.H.S.C.E - We aim to encourage awareness, respect and responsibility for themselves and others.
Art - Art is taught as a weekly lesson.
Physical Education, I.C.T, Music and French - These subjects are taught by specialist teachers each week.
HOMEWORK
Reading books are sent home regularly in order for the girls to share their reading with home and school. In addition the girls will have spellings to learn weekly. We may occassionally send home work for other subject areas.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
In the first two terms we send out a weekly Homelinks letter, setting out a brief outline of the week's learning activities. A diary is also sent home to enable further communication between home and school.
