ST. MARY'S PARENTS' CHOIR
We have taken inspiration from the success of the Military Wives and formed a choir for parents and friends of the school.
The first rehearsal of the new St Mary’s choir will took place on Monday at the Lower School, led by Pam Garland, music teacher. Mrs Stanhope, Director of Lower School, explained that the Military Wives have been a huge inspiration to the parents and pupils at the independent girls’ school, especially given Colchester’s army connections. “It’s been great to see how successful the choir has been, reaching number one at Christmas and raising so much money for charity,” she said.
Emma Stanhope said that the school is prolific on the singing scene, having been the first in Essex to reach a platinum standard in the national Sing Up Awards. These are given to schools which have enjoyed exceptional achievements in singing.
She added: “As well as our lower and senior school choirs, we also have a singing club which will perform at the Royal Albert Hall in April as part of an event for Barnardos, another charity we support,” said Mrs Stanhope.
“We’re also hosting a singing festival for independent schools at the Mercury Theatre in March, so we’ve got a very varied calendar of events taking place this year.”
Principal Hilary Vipond said: “We hope that as many parents and friends of the school join the choir – even if they lack confidence in their singing ability, it’s a great way to get together."
